Side event: Land rights as a foundation: strengthening climate action and justice through the Rio Conventions’ land agenda
This side event focuses on the role of securing land rights in implementing climate action and realising climate justice.
This side event focuses on the role of securing land rights in implementing climate action and realising climate justice. This includes different pathways such as a proposed "Joint Protocol on Securing Legitimate Land Rights in the Rio Conventions" as a strategic protocol, which we believe needs to be developed and taken up by all three Rio Conventions at the initiative of the Secretariats. With the UNCCD decision on land tenure, the UNCCD can take a leading role in pursuing this goal. By focusing on secure land tenure, particularly for women and marginalised groups, the Protocol aims to strengthen efforts and global agenda setting towards land degradation neutrality (LDN) and promote equitable, rights-based climate action that includes adaptation, climate-induced human mobility, loss and damage.
