Discussion
Bridging the Rio Conventions to advance women’s land rights
Roundtable discussion at COP16 to advance the Women's Land Rights Initiative, focusing on leveraging synergies and identifying activities to secure women's land rights across the Rio Conventions.
All three Rio Conventions, UNCBD, UNFCCC and UNCCD, depend on land-based measures to achieve their targets. Tenure rights of women, who play a crucial role in the management of the required land, are often not sufficiently addressed in these Conventions. By undermining their access to land, land-based climate action not only violates human rights but also jeopardizes the very objectives of the Conventions. Advancing women’s land rights across all three Conventions is therefore imperative – and opportunities exist.
The Women’s Land Rights Initiative (WLRI) co-hosted by the Secretariats of the three Conventions, TMG Research and the Robert Bosch Stiftung, brings grassroots organisations, CSOs, national focal points, the three Women Caucus and the Secretariats together, to leverage synergies across the Rio Conventions to protect women’s land rights. These stakeholders have identified important strategic entry points for such synergies, including the alignment of national plans and indicators, coordination of national (gender) focal points and resource mobilisation for engaging women’s grassroots organisations.
In a roundtable discussion, the three Women Caucus, CSOs and grassroots organisations will further reflect on their role and contributions to build synergies and translate these into concrete action to further shape the WLRI in the future.
