High-level dialogue on desertification, land degradation and drought
Assessing progress made in the last decade and mapping the way forward
Land is the foundation of our societies and is a cornerstone of global food security, environmental health, poverty eradication and affordable energy. One fifth of Earth’s land area is degraded, including more than half of all agricultural land. Each year, more than 12 million hectares of land are lost to desertification, land degradation and drought. Though the UN Decade for Deserts and the Fight against Desertification (2011-2020) has come to an end, efforts to restore ecosystems and achieve land degradation neutrality by 2030 continue. This high-level dialogue, convened by the President of the General Assembly, will take place at UNHQ in New York, where participants will assess the progress made in the last decade and map the way forward.
