Workshop

Nutrition and Democracy: Sugar tax, nutrition scores, marketing bans?

A discussion of the possible benefits of control instruments in the food system, with examples from Chile, Mexico and Germany

Ernährung und Demokratie

This bilingual event, with German and English simultaneous translation, will discuss the effects of control mechanisms such as taxes and marketing bans against less healthy food types, particular sugar, fat and salt. Adressing the advantages and disadvantages of both legal regulations and voluntary commitments, the discussants will ask what countries such as Germany can learn from policies put into practice in the global South. The event will also askwhat steps the new German government should take to initiate a long overdue turnaround in the German food system. Examples from Mexico, Chile and Germany will be presented.
