TMG Think Tank for Sustainability

Hard Talk Adaptation

This dialogue series explores critical themes of climate risk and resilience, uniting diverse voices to accelerate transformational adaptation and answer one of the most urgent questions of our time: When a 1.5 to 2.6°C world becomes a reality, how must policies and systems evolve to confront a new landscape of risk and forge resilient societies?

About

As the window to limit global temperatures to 1.5°C rapidly closes, the increasing likelihood of reaching or exceeding 2.6°C becomes an ever-more plausible reality. But what might the climate risk landscape of such a world look like?

As climate change accelerates, pushing ecosystems and societies toward irreversible planetary tipping points, incremental adaptation that leaves pre-existing systems intact will not be enough to counter a cascade of transboundary climate risks.

Rising seas, extreme weather, and accelerating biodiversity loss demand transformational adaptation: bold, structural changes that ensure adaptation is both still a viable option and strategy for safeguarding communities, ecosystems, and economies from irreversible damage.

To accelerate this shift, TMG launched Hard Talk Adaptation: an international, multistakeholder dialogue series. The series explores the adaptation challenges posed by a 1.5 to 2.6°C world and identifies effective strategies for meeting adaptation needs across the public and private sectors, while creating the conditions for a more resilient society.

Hard Talk Adaptation embraces a whole-of-society approach, bringing together stakeholders from government, the private sector, non-profits, scientific institutions, and civil society to identify and address concrete adaptation needs and context-specific solutions. By highlighting and evaluating existing adaptation measures at national and subnational levels, the Series reveals systemic barriers to implementing and scaling successful models that uniquely advance adaptation.

The Series also forges alliances and a dynamic community of action committed to pioneering innovative policies, business solutions, financial models, and discourse to transform the landscape of climate adaptation globally.

Hard Talk Adaptation is generously funded by and carried out in partnership with the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
