The Critical Food Studies conference, hosted by the University of the Western Cape, University of Pretoria and the University of Kwazulu-Natal between 17 – 19 November 2021, drew humanities, arts and food security scholars together for discussion. The conference, which aimed to consider food insecurity from a human perspective more broad than food production or consumption statistics, was covered in the South African news website the
Daily Maverick. TMG Research Associate Haidee Swanby, together with collaborators from the Food Agency Cape Town, Nomonded Buthelezi and Mimi Nyaba, gave a paper on how an intersectional feminist perspective can steer community-led action against hunger, based on a co-research project in communities in the Cape Flats, in Cape Town, South Africa. Further information about the project can be found in their
recently published article.
