Covid-19 Food/Future

Tracking the pandemic's impacts on African food systems

Implemented in collaboration with the Youth in Soil network under the auspices of TMG's SEWOH Lab research programme, which analyses the role of digitalisation in creating socially inclusive and transformative food systems. Starting in April 2020, writers based in Benin, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, and South Africa, published blog posts exploring how food system actors were navigating the pandemic's day-to-day impacts on their livelihoods. Together with the related "Video Diaries from Nairobi" project, the overall objective of the initiative was to capture real-time perspectives and “voices from the ground,” including those of women and young farmers, informal retailers, and food-insecure households.
In addition to publishing more than 157 articles in our Enabling Sustainability platform, the Youth in Soil network built up a strong social media presence with thousands of followers. Beyond its substantive reporting activities, the initiative enabled the TMG to broaden its network of collaborators across Africa, and provided valuable insights for the further development of the SEWOH Lab’s research programmes.
