The legitimate tenure rights of vulnerable land users are often violated when an increasing demand for land meets fragile land governance contexts. The resulting conflicts may lead to human rights violations. Though secure tenure rights and equal access to land are promoted by the FAO Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests, these guidelines are a voluntary instrument. However, they build on human rights principles. This project therefore aims to strengthen these connections by developing a governance monitoring tool which establishes linkages between land rights and human rights. This concept note details the thinking behind the project, a collaboration between TMG, the Danish Institute for Human Rights and the Malawi Human Rights Commission, and outlines the project process.
