Our latest paper, co-authored with partners IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Centre (ICPAC), German Aerospace Center (DLR), and collaborator at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), has been published as a pre-print on AfricArXiv, a community-driven platform dedicated to advancing African research and fostering collaboration.

Our review explores the current state of Early Warning Systems (EWS) for transboundary pests such as the desert locust, fall armyworm, and African armyworm, focusing on the escalating impact of climate change. We examine existing pest management strategies and identify the technological and governance gaps within the current EWS. The challenges are even more critical for pests like the tomato leafminer and quelea birds, which lack functional EWS altogether. Our work underscores the urgent need for transboundary pests to be included in multi-hazard EWS frameworks. Additionally, there is a pressing need to strengthen governance structures to address these growing agriculture threats in IGAD member states.
