Unlocking Land Tenure: Pathways for policy action after the triple COPs of 2024

Explore our latest policy brief in this dedicated webpage to discover a powerful cross-Convention analysis of land tenure outcomes from 2024's year of triple-COPs—UNFCCC COP29, CBD COP16, and UNCCD COP16.

This brief outlines how land rights, human rights, gender equality, and the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities are being prioritized—or overlooked—across the Conventions. It also maps key decisions and entry points for coordinated advocacy and policy alignment in multilateral land governance.

The findings are clear: Land rights are gaining traction—but progress is uneven. A few key insights:

  • UNCCD COP16 made bold moves: calling for National Focal Points on land, more awareness raising and access to justice in Land Degradation Neutrality strategies.

  • CBD COP16 made history by adopting land tenure indicators into the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework monitoring system—a first for global biodiversity policy.

  • UNFCCC COP29 reaffirmed IPLC participation, but made no binding commitments on land rights or tenure—leaving a major gap in climate justice.
