We have better solutions than chemical warfare to tackle climate-related invasive pests and diseases
TMG study exposes the devastating environmental impact of organophosphate pesticides in recent campaigns against desert locust invasions by Ethiopia and Kenya and calls for smarter and more sustainable early warning and action systems

To control a highly destructive desert locust invasion in the Eastern Africa and Horn region between 2019-2021, Ethiopia and Kenya sprayed well over a million hectares of territory with damaging organophosphate pesticides. While the immediate threat was averted, there is now sufficient evidence that the decision to use highly toxic chemical pesticides had severe impacts on honey bees and other pollinators, indicating that valuable biodiversity was destroyed by the campaign.
Conducted by a TMG research team, the findings from this comprehensive scientific study exploring the environmental impacts of large-scale pesticide campaigns have been published in the journal Agronomy.
